All music should have rhythm and pulse. It should be exciting and
dynamic to listen to and feel. Romantic orchestral music is
no exception, it's just that in most modern performances the vitality of
rhythm has been gradually eroded in favour of the simplest way of playing
the notes. Making each note as perfect as possible means losing the thread
of the musical line - and the sense of a whole piece of music.
TORSO believes you should be able to tap your feet in
Romantic music without losing the thread in a fog of lovely but
meaningless sound. You should be able to hear the heartbeat in a
melody, where it's going and where it wants to go. The ebb and flow of
music should be an overriding life-force, a way to tell when the music is
moving forward or arriving at a resting place.
Romantic Music has been smoothed over,
moulded into seamless, perfect, boring landscapes for a pastel-shaded,
self-perpetuating audience. We aim to give it back its LIFE.
We like it. We hope you do.
